When you visit - Always inspect as a place can sound better than it actually is. Look for:
dothappy healthy dogs
dotclean fresh water
dotclean runs
dotprofessional friendly staff

Questions to Ask
Exercise/playtime
dotAre the dogs exercised, and if so how long for?
dotWhere are they exercised, how large is the area and is it concrete or grass?
dotAre the dogs exercised with a person or left out by themselves?
dotIs a choice of exercise with a group or alone offered?
dotAre a variety of toys available for play?
Food
dotWhat is fed and when is it fed?
dotIs the food left out if its not eaten immediately?
dotWhat happens if your dog won't eat? (Some dogs go off their food when in kenneling care, due to the change of environment)
dotAre the dogs weighed regularly to make sure that a good weight is maintained?

Accommodation
dotHow many dogs does the kennel look after at its maximum occupancy?
dotIs there an indoor and outdoor section to the run?
dotHow large is the run area?
dotIs the indoor section protected from the weather?
dotIs bedding provided and off the ground?
dotHow are the kennels cleaned? (are they hosed down while the dog is still in the kennel?

Kennel pre-requisites
dotFlea free - all dogs in care should be on a flea treatment that kills fleas on contact.
dot Worming treatment - all dogs should be on an all wormer for whip, hook, round and tape worm and should also be heart wormed
dotVaccinated - all dogs should be vaccinated and vaccination certificate shown to confirm this.
dotPet information - make sure you leave the kennel a record of all relevant information to your pet. i.e. afraid of storms, allergies, particular traits, etc. ( A good kennel should be asking for this information)
dotDoes the kennel have a vet on call?

Specialist care
dotElderly, Puppy, Overweight, Separation anxiety
dotTimid/frightened pets, Medical needs
